Gauthameswarar Temple, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur
Gauthameswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kumbakonam Town in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Gauthameswarar / Yagnobhaveetheswar / Upaveda Nadeswarar and Mother is called as Soundara Nayaki. The temple is one of 12 Shiva temples connected with the Mahamaham festival, which takes place in Kumbakonam every 12 years. This temple is located on the western bank of the Mahamaham Tank, Kumbakonam. The temple is important place for Viruchika Rasi people. The last consecration of the temple was held on 9 September 2015.

The Temple
This Temple is facing towards east with three tiered Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Gauthameswarar / Yagnobhaveetheswar / Upaveda Nadeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Nardana Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.
Mother is called as Soundara Nayaki. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There are shrines for Maha Ganapathy, Sage Gautama, Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Devasena, Navagrahas, Saneeswarar, Surya, Gajalakshmi, Maha Saraswathi, Bhairava, Chandikeswarar and Anjaneya in the temple premises. Theertham associated with this Temple is Gowthama Theertham.
Temple Opening Time
The temple remains open from 06.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and 04.30 p.m. to 08.00 p.m.
Festivals
Mahamaham festival, Masi Magam and Shivarathri are celebrated in this temple with much fanfare.

Prayers
Devotees perform pujas to Lord Kala Bhairava on the Ashtami day (8th day of new moon or full moon day) for relief from any fear in this temple. Those born of Viruchika sign (Rasi) may gain benefits by praying to Lord of the temple. Donating a cow to the temple is believed to eliminate all evil effects and bring prosperity to the family.
