Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Thirupattur – Brahma Shrine
Though a
Shiva temple, there is a tall idol for Lord Brahmma in a separate shrine. Lord
Brahma's Shrine is situated in the inner praharam of the Temple, as one turns
left before entering Sri Brahmapureeswarar Shrine. The idol is magnificent 6
feet high and 6.5 feet circumference. The idol of Lord Brahma is in meditative
pose sitting in Padmasana on a lotus. Lord Brahma’s shrine is such that one
can have a very close darshan of the deity.
The idol
is always covered with turmeric. Every morning at around 7 am, Abhishekam is
performed to Lord Brahma and turmeric is applied. In this
temple, Lord Brahma is given the status of Lord Dakshina Moorthy
(Lord Shiva in penance form, considered equivalent to Guru (meaning teacher,
one among the Navagrahas, in charge for education etc.)), even though there is
a separate sanctum for Lord Dakshina Moorthy.
Brahmma
worship should be done with 36 lamps (representing 27 stars and 9 planets)
offering 108 tamarind rice balls. The devotee should walk 9 rounds. Thursday is
considered auspicious for worshipping Brahma. One can participate in the
Abhishekam at 6.00 am.
