Kariya Manikka
Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Pondavakkam Village in Thiruvallur District
of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kariya Manikka Perumal and
Mother is called Kamalavalli Nayaki.
Etymology
The
village was originally called as "Puguntha Vakkam" (In Tamil
"Puguntha" means entered). As Brahmins entered this village, the
village name was called as "Puguntha Vakkam". And as the years
passed, the village now is called as "Pondavakkam".
History
This
Temple was built by Krishna Devaraya for the Brahmin priests of Nagalapuram
Temple.
The
Temple
There is
no Raja gopuram for this temple. The Dwajasthambam is 36 Feet height made of
original Teak wood. Presiding
Deity is called as Kariya Manikka Perumal. He is found in Nindra
Thirukolam (Standing Posture). The Vimaanam above the garbhagraham is big and
Dasavathara sculptures are made on that. Mother is called Kamalavalli Nayaki. There
are shrines for Alwars, Garuda and Hanuman in the Temple premises. The
Madapalli is in the south east of praharam.
During
Panguni month on 5th, 6th and 7th (i.e March 19th – 21st) Soorya Bhagavan
worships the Perumal with his rays in the morning between 6:15 am and 6:25 am.
During these days, sun rays directly falls on Kariamanicka Perumal (Moolavar)
feet. The temple structure is designed in such a way that the sun rays directly
enters temple Karpagraha and falls on Perumal feet only during 3 days of the
entire year.
Festivals
10 days Brahmotsavam
in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, Pavitrotsavam, Laksharchanas and Hanuman
Jayanthi are being celebrated with customary fervency and dedication.

Bus Stop, 4 Kms from Uthukottai, 23 Kms from Thiruvallur, 26 Kms from
Thiruvallur Railway Station, 60 Kms from Chennai and 69 Kms from Chennai
Airport. Devotees must travel from Thiruvallur
to Uthukottai and all the buses stops at Pondavakkam village.
