Lakshmi Hayagreeva Temple, Nanganallur, Chennai
Lakshmi Hayagreeva Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Nanganallur,
a well-known locality in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. Hayagreeva is considered
as the God of Knowledge. This is one of the very few Hayagreeva temples of
Tamilnadu. Nanganallur can be called as the Chinna Kanchipuram of Chennai due
to the numerous temples it has in and around. This temple is one of the oldest
temples in Nanganallur and is managed and run by Vaishnavites. The temple is
located very close to the famous Anjaneya Temple.
The Temple
The temple is a rare temple, dedicated to Hayagriva. The
east facing temple has a small 3-tiered Rajagopuram. The Flagstaff, Balipeedam
and Garuda shrine are found facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum enshrines
Lakshmi Hayagriva. Every shrine in this temple has two idols – Moolavar and
Utsavar.
On the right-hand side of the temple, one of the deities
of the temple is placed on a pallakku (carriage) and puja is performed every
day, with Brahmins chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam. Later, the deity is taken
around Nanganallur, in a procession. The temple also houses the other shrines
such as Desikar, Ganesha, Andal, Venkatachalapathy, Anjaneya, Sudarshana with
Narasimha on his back side, Alwars and Hanuman.
Prayers
The most common belief is that, the blessings of
Hayagreeva will strengthen the Guru position in the horoscope and students will
excel in their studies. A large majority of devotees are students and the
temple is especially crowded on Thursday.
