Thirukolakudi – History
Thirukolapuram was considered to be part of Parambu Nadu
ruled by Pari Vendhan, Velir Chieftain of Sangam age. He is remembered as one
of the Kadai Ezhu Vallal (the last seven great patrons) in Tamil
literature. Kaniyan
Poongunranar, was an influential Tamil philosopher
from the Sangam age. He was born and brought up in Mahibalanpatti, a village
panchayat in the Thirupattur taluk of Sivaganga district in the state
of Tamil
Nadu, India. He composed two poems in Purananuru
and Natrinai.
His famous Tamil quote "Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum
Kelir" (To us all towns are our own, everyone our kin) is at present
depicted in the United Nations Organisation. A. P. J Abdul Kalam was the first one
to quote this famous quote in European Union Historical Speech by Abdul
Kalam in European Union and the another one is the PM Narendra
Modi who quoted it in 74th Session of the UN
General Assembly. Mahibalanpatti is situated to the south of this
Temple.
It is believed that Temple construction would have been
started in 8th Century AD and temple in current shape would have
been completed in 13th Century AD. The Temple construction spans
over a period of 500 years. Most of the inscriptions in this Temple belonged to
13th Century AD Pandyan King Maravarma Thirubhuvana Chakravarthy
Kulasekara Thevan. This Shrine is situated amidst Poongundra Naadu, Kanaadu,
kalvayil Naadu and Konadu. Villagers from these four regions worshipped Lord
Shiva. Hence, the Lord came to be called as Naanatteesar.
