Thellar – Inscriptions
Pallava King Nandivarman was
mentioned as Thellaru Erintha Nandivarman (as he defeated Pandyas in Thellaru)
in the inscriptions. Thellar was mentioned as Jayamkonda Chozha Mandalathu Venkundrakkottathu
Vikrama Pandya Valanaatu Thellaru Naatu Thellaru in the inscriptions. Lord was
also called as Mooleswarar & Thellarumudaiyar and the Temple was called as
Thirumoolatanam Udaiyar Koil as per the inscriptions. There are inscriptions which
talks about renovations, subsidies and gifts given Kalingarayan,
Chitamurthillai Vanamudaiyan and Vikrama Pandyan in the Temple premises.
There was interesting
inscription about a husband and wife in this Temple. One day in Thellar, a
drunkard was teasing the ladies who were returning from the pond with drinking
water to their respective homes. Ladies complained his behaviour to local
village courts. His case was investigated, and judgment was given. The
Judgement ordered him to light lamps in Thirumoolataneswarar Temple for
specific period of time. It is interesting to know that the judgement was given
by wife of the offender. Once day, instead of her husband, she was going to
Temple for lighting the lamps. A lady from the village confronted her. She said,
as a judge, she punished her husband but as a wife, she was serving her husband
by doing his job.
