Bhoologanathar Temple, Thirumangalam – Legends

Thirumangalam:

As per legend, earthly wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvathi happened in Thirumanancheri. The entire celestial beings gathered in Thirumanancheri to witness the marriage. The divine couple felt that the human beings were unable to witness the marriage due to the huge gathering of celestial beings. To bless them with their marriage posture, the divine couple took seven steps in the guise of performing saptapathi ritual to reach Thirumangalam. Thus, the human beings are blessed with darshan of their marriage posture.

Kala Samhara Moorthy:

When the divine couple reached Thirumangalam, Sage Vasishta along with his wife Arundhathi also came to this place for performing Mrityunjaya Homa. They started performing the Homa. Lord Shiva appeared in the sacrificial fire in the form of Kala Samhara Moorthy during the completion of Homa. There is an idol of Kala Samhara Moorthy in the temple in remembrance of this event.

Ponnur:

As per legend, Mother Maha Lakshmi gave gold to Kubera for making Mangal Sutra (Thirumangalyam) for the divine marriage. It is said that the Mangal Sutra was made in Ponnur, a nearby village.
