Vedapureeswarar Temple,
Thirukkazhithattai – Inscriptions
The oldest inscription in this
temple is dated to the 22nd regnal year of Parantaka Chola I. It
records a gift of land for offerings to this
temple by a member of the Assembly of Amani Narayana Chaturvedi Mangalam
(modern Tiruvisalur). There is an inscription dated to 7th regnal
year of Sundara Chola. It records the grant of land to this
temple by his general Parantaka Siriya Velar.
This general had been mentioned
in another damaged inscription. There is an inscription dated to 14th
regnal year of Sundara Chola. It records endowments for perpetual lamps to be
burnt in the
temple after the death of the general Parantaka Siriya Velar by his wife,
daughter and son of the general namely, Rajadichchi, Kunjaramalli and Velan
Sundara Chola.
There is an inscription dated to
3rd regnal year of Rajaraja Chola I. It records the grant of land
for the supply of 108 pots of water for ceremonial baths on monthly Sankrantis to this
temple by Kilanadigal, the queen of Uthama Chola. There is another inscription
dated to Rajaraja Chola I. It records a gift of a silver pot weighing
181½ Kalanju to this
temple by Sembiyan Maadeviyar, the mother of Uthama Chola.
