Vadivazhagiya Nambi Perumal Temple, (Sundararaja
Perumal Temple), Anbil – Literary Mention
The
temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabhandham, the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Tirumazhisai Alwar in a hymn. The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in
the book. This temple is referred in a verse where the seven shrines
featuring Vishnu in a reclining position - Tirukkudandai at Kumbakonam, Tiruvekkaa at Kanchipuram, Thiruevvul at Tiruvallur, Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Tiruppernagar, Anbil and Thiruparkadal are mentioned. The Azhwar says
the presiding Lord in all these shrines will rule over and protect those who
seek his shelter.
Tirumazhisai Azhvaar’s comparison:
While
referring to Lord Vishnu in his reclining posture, Tirumazhisai Azhvaar talks
about Anbil (Vadivazhagiya Nambi) alongside Srirangam Ranganathar, Appaala
Ranganathar (Koviladi), Thiru Kudanthai, Thiru Vallur, Thiruvekka and Thiru
Paarkadal.
