Manikandeswarar Temple is a
Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nadar village in Kumbakonam
Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil
Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Manikandeswarar and Mother is
called as Chinthamani. The Temple is believed to be built during Chola Period. The
Village was named after Nattaru River flowing nearby.
Legends
Once, Lord Shiva performed his
cosmic dance as per the request of Devas and Sages. While he was dancing, bells
from his anklets fell on different places. Temples had been raised wherever bell
fell. This Temple is one among them. Nearby, Thandanthottam Village is the
place where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance.
The
Temple
This is a west facing Temple. Presiding
Deity is called as Manikandeswarar and is facing west. He is housed in the sanctum
in the form of Lingam. Mother is called as Chinthamani. She is housed in a
separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to the right side of the
sanctum.
There is a unique Koshta idol of
Dakshinamoorthy in the southern side of the sanctum wall. He is called as Sarpa
Rasi Dakshinamoorthy. He is holding a snake on right arms. Here Dakshinamoorthy
in Ardhanareeswarar form sitting on a Rasi Mandalam, which includes all the 12
Rasis. People pray here for getting relief from Sarpa Dosha.
There is a shrine for Guru
Bhairavar, second of eight Bhairavars, can be found in the Temple premises. He
is gracing the devotees sitting in Rishaba. There is a shrine for Maha
Ganapathy in the south western side and a shrine for Lord Murugan in the north
western side of the Temple premises. Theertham associated with this Temple is
Surya Pushkarini. It is situated to the eastern side of the Temple. Sthala
Vriksham is Vilwa Tree.
Festivals
The Temple follows one Kala
Pooja. Monthly Pradoshams, Parihara Poojas on Krithikai Days, Friday Poojas to
Chintamani, Ashtami Day Poojas to Guru Bhairavar are conducted in this temple
with much fanfare.
Prayers
People pray to Mother
Chinthamani for getting relief from Navagraha Dosha and to become rich.
Devotees worship to Sarpa Rasi Dakshinamoorthy to get relief from Doshas.
People also pray here to overcome marriage obstacles, relief from brain &
nerve problems, for business prosperity, to get relief from debts, to get
relief from legal disputes and for longevity of life. Devotees perform
Sadabishekam and Sashti Aptha Poorthy here.
