Theerthagireeswarar Temple, Thirukazhukundram, Chengalpattu
Vedagiriswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thirukazhukundram, an outskirt of Chennai City in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Theerthagireeswarar and Mother is called as Prabhambigai. The Temple is situated on the west bank of the temple pond, popularly known as Sangu Theertham. The Temple is situated at about 500 meters from Vedagiriswarar Temple.


Legends
It is believed that Sage Markandeya installed the Lingam of this Temple. Theertham associated with this Temple is Sangu Theertham. When Sage Markandeya began to perform abhishekam to Theerthagireeswarar, a conch appeared in the pond. Sage Markandeya used that conch to perform abhishekam to Lord Siva. From that occasion onwards, one conch appears in this temple pond, once in every 12 years. The last occasion when the conch appeared was 1st September 2011.
The Temple
Presiding Deity is called as Theerthagireeswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. When water level of the pond raises, presiding deity will get immersed in water and remain for six months. During that time, poojas will not be performed. All other times, poojas are being performed twice every day. Mother is called as Prabhambigai. She is housed in a separate shrine. Sculptures of Agasthiya, Bringi, Ashta Bhuja Agora Veeerabadhra, Bhairavar and Ashta Thika Balagas are found in the stone pillars of this temple. Special poojas are being performed on Pournami and Pradhosham days.
