Mathala Mathavesuvarar Temple is a Hindu Shrine
dedicated to Lord Shiva located inside Kanchipuram
Ekambaranathar Temple in Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram District of
Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Mathala Mathavesuvarar. This is one of
the 108 Shiva temples mentioned in Kanchi Puranam. The Temple is also called as
Mattalamadhavasham.
Legends
Lord Vishnu after witnessing the cosmic dance of Lord
Shiva in Chidambaram had a desire to play Mathalam (drum) during his cosmic dance.
To fulfil his wish, he prayed to Lord Shiva for seeking his permission. Lord
Shiva pleased by his prayers commanded Lord Vishnu to go to Kanchi and worship
him. Obliging Lord Shiva command, he came to Kanchi and started worshipping
Lord Shiva by installing a Lingam called Mathala Mathavesuvarar. Delighted Lord
Shiva performed Kaapu Nadanam. As Lord Shiva was dancing, Lord Vishnu beat the
holy drum according to the divine movements of Lord Shiva.
The Temple
This Shrine is situated in the inner prakaram
surrounding the sanctum of Kanchipuram
Ekambaranathar Temple. It is located close to Arumugam Shrine and next to Markandeswarar
Lingam.
