Saptharisheeswarar
Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Lalgudi Town in
Trichy District of Tamilnadu. This place is also called as Thiruthavathurai, is
situated on the banks of river Coloroon, (known also as north Cauvery). It was believed
that the seven rishis, Athri, Brighu, Pulasthiar, Vasistar, Gouthama, Angirasar
and Marichi, prayed to the presiding deity, Saptharisheeswarar, to ward off the
bad period they were passing through. This is an ancient temple about 500-1000
years old.
Etymology
It seems
Malik Kafur who marauded the entire South India visited this place
and at that time the temple tower was being painted red and he asked
his assistants, “What is that red temple(Lal Gudi) ?” and from then on the
name Lalgudi struck to the town. His question became the name of the place then
as Lalgudi. This is a very ancient temple.
