Tharuka Vaneswarar Temple, Thirupparaithurai, Trichy

Tharuka Vaneswarar Temple, Thirupparaithurai, Trichy
Tharuka Vaneswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thirupparaithurai in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. The site is also called as Tharukavanam in Sanskrit language. During the period of Raja Raja Chola II, it was called as Rajagambiranallur. It is believed that the temple was built during the reign of Parantaka Chola I in 10th century AD (however, the temple was present in a different form (probably as a brick temple) at least from the 7th century AD). It is located on the banks of the river Akanda Kaveri (the widest point in the course of the river Cauvery).

Presiding Deity is called as Tharuka Vaneswarar / Paraithurai Nathar and Mother is called as Hemavarnaambal / Pasumponmyilambal. The sun's rays illuminate the sanctum on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Purattasi. Meditating under the Parai tree here is considered very special. The temple is praised in the hymns of Saints Gnanasambandhar, Thirunavukkarasar and Arunagiriar. This is the 120th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 3rd Sthalam on south side of river Cauvery of Chozha Naadu.

Doing the first “Muzhukku” (dip) here on the first day of Aippasi and taking the last Muzhukku on the last day of Aippasi in the Cauvery river of Mayiladuthurai is considered to be very auspicious. Kadai Muzhukku, a bath in Cauvery at Mayiladuthurai on the last date of Aipasi (October-November) is taken by devotees while the first on the first Aipasi takes place in Paraithurai. It is the firm belief of the devotees that this bathing would cleanse them of their sins.
