Madhyarjuneswarar Temple, Illuppur, Nagapattinam

Madhyarjuneswarar Temple, Illuppur, Nagapattinam
Madhyarjuneswarar Temple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located in Illupur Village at a distance of about 22 kms from Mayiladuthurai on Mayiladuthurai – Tharangampadi Route. This place got the name Illupur because of abundance presence of Iluppai Trees in this place. Illupur is located on the southern banks of Veerachozhan River and Sankaranpanthal on the northern banks of Veerachozhan River.

Presiding Deity is called as Madhyarjuneswarar and Mother is called as Maragathavalli. Arjunam indicates the Marudham Tree. The Temple should have been similar to Thiruvidaimarudur Temple in olden days. Thala Vriksham should have been Marudham Tree for this Temple. This Temple is located on the western banks of big Tank and covers an area of about half acres. The Sanctum is facing east and Mother Shrine is facing south. A big Mandapam connects both Lord and Mother Shrines.
Vinayagar and Murugan are located at the entrance of Sanctum. Vinayagar & Murugan Shrines are located in the Prakaram. Shani Bhagavan and Bhairavar Shrines are located in the Mandapam. The Temple is believed to very big but later it got dilapidated and shrunk to a small Temple. This can be attested by the Idols of Bhairavar and Lingam lying outside the temple. Bheemeswarar Temple is located nearby.
