Rathnagiriswarar Temple, Thirumarugal – The Temple
This is one of the 78 “Madakoils”, built on an elevation, by Ko Chengata Chola Nayanar so that elephants cannot enter the sanctum. The Lord Shiva in this temple is known as Rathnagiriswarar (Sanskrit) and Maanikkavannar (Tamil). The Lordess Parvathi is called as "Vanduvar Kuzhali" in Tamil and "Aamodhalanayagi"(Sanskrit). Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthy. There are shrines dedicated to Somaskandar, Viswanatha and Visalakshi, Shanmuga, Ganapathi, Gajalakshmi, Natarajar, Chandikeswarar and the Navagrahas.
There is also an inscription of King Serfoji of Thanjavur belonging to 1882 A.D., which speaks about a grant of 400 sovereigns made to the temple. There is a Lakshmi Theertham which is visited by Lord Varadaraja and his Consorts enshrined in a separate temple, on the ``Varalakshmi Vratam'' day. Sannidhis of Thirugnana Sampanthar, Saptha Mathargal, Soundarya Nayagi, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma and Durgai are located in this Temple. Marugal is a type of Banana as this is a Temple tree hence the village is called as Thirumarugal.
The temple is having 2 prakarams and crowned with a 5 tiered Rajagopuram. The Sudhai Sirpam of chetti’s son who came alive by Tirugnanasambandar’s Devara Pathikam, after death due to snake bite in Rajagopuram can be seen. Lakshmi Theertham with Neerazhi Mandapam is located in front of the temple. In Koshtam Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma and Durgai are located.
In Ambal Sannadhi paintings of Kusakethu kings story can be seen. In Natarajar Saba, paintings of Pathanjali, Viyakrapathar and Chetti’s son can be seen. In the first level there is a Sannadhi for Sani Bhagavan (on the right side of Ambal Sannadhi). In the ground level prakaram Sannadhi for Sooram Theertha Vinayagar, Santhana Vinayagar, Marugalurudayar, Soundaranayagi and Yamuna Sandikeswari near Ambal Sannadhi can be found.
Sannadhi for Somaskandhar, Nalvar, 63var, Prathana Vinayagar, Parasarar worshiped Lingam, Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Mahalakshmi, Natarajar Saba, Navagrahas, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Nagar, Chettippenn and Chetti Pillai in one peedam on the inner parakaram can be seen.
There is Nel Kalanchiyam (Paddy storage on the left side of entrance to the upper level. Another Theertham called Shiva Theertham is located in the Temple.
