Kalyana Varadharaja Perumal Temple (Kothanda Ramar Temple), Paruthiyur – The Temple

Kalyana Varadharaja Perumal Temple (Kothanda Ramar Temple), Paruthiyur – The Temple
This is one of five popular Rama temples in this region, the others being Thillai Vilagam, Vaduvur, Mudikondan and Adambar. The temple is looking to build a Raja gopuram and a Vasantha Mandapa in front of the Thaayar Sannidhi in addition to reconstructing the outer walls.

Adhi Varadaraja Perumal Shrine:
The main idol Adhi Varadharaja Perumal in the Paruthiyur Temple is bestowing his grace with 'Prayoga-Chakra". This chakra is believed to have been sent to protect King Ambarisha, a Vishnu devotee, from the curse of Durvasa, the famous sage. In Duruvasa's rage, he created a demon to kill Ambarisha, out of a strand of his hair. King Ambarisha prayed to his favorite God Vishnu. Lord Narayana’s Sudarshana intervened and destroyed the demon and protected King Ambarisha.

Sudarshana Chakra:
Hindu mythology is full of references regarding the relationship and synergy between the Chakram and Lord Vishnu. Sudarshana Chakra or the divine disc of Maha Vishnu is one of the Lord’s prominent weapons in annihilating evil forces. Usually Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra in most temples is held on the side but in the Paruthiyur Temple it is in a rare Prayoga state ~ as if it is in use. It is believed that it is this Chakra that was used by the Lord against Durvasa. Hence there are also no houses built on the south side of the street across the Temple. The benefits of Prayers and Homas to Sudarshana are innumerable. It is stated in the Ahirbudhnya Samhita that when the devotees are suffering from the afflictions caused by incurable diseases, sorcery, or enemies, Lord Sudarshana dispels his fierce form and comes to their protection.
Kalyana Varadaraja Perumal Shrine:
Since the Lord Adhi Varadharaja Perumal was very powerful with the Chakra weapon and was very fierce another Vishnu, Kalyana Varadarajar was also erected in the same Sannadhi. This Perumal blesses bestows well-being to bhaktas. These Panchaloka Utsava idols of this Temple are very ancient 10th century Chola bronze.

Mahalakshmi Thayar Shrine:
Mahalakshmi Thayar the consort of Kalyana Varadharaja Perumal, is an exact replica of Triplicane Parthasarathy Temple Vedavalli Thayar. Worshipping this Paruthiyur Mahalakshmi is said to be to obtain health, wealth and prosperity. Mahalakshmi Thaayar is very special to bhaktas seeking boons instantly. An aura of divine happiness, mental and spiritual satisfaction, and prosperity always exists around her.
Paruthiyur Ramar Shrine:
Though the presiding deity is Sri Varadharaja Perumal, the temple is more popular for the Ramar shrine. Anjaneya and Sita Pirati are on the right side of Kodandarama and Lakshmana to the left and the divine couples bestow their grace in Kalyana Kolam. Rama is seen in a grand standing posture wielding the bow with his left hand while his right is holding a long arrow. The idol of Lord Rama here at this temple is a symbol of divine purity. Lakshmana is seen sporting a beautiful smile.

It is believed that performing Pujas to Paruthiyur Ramar would eliminate Graha doshas, family feuds will vanish and bring unity and ensure lot of happiness and joy within the family. The Anjaneya facing the East, wards off the troubles caused by bad influences of the planets and Bhaktas get purification of heart (Chitta-siddhi) and confers all prosperity-Ashta Aishwarya. It is believed that the entire set of idols were found and installed by Paruthiyur Ramayana Sastri, who also built the temple.
