Vaseeswarar Temple, Tirupaasur, Thiruvallur

Vaseeswarar Temple, Tirupaasur, Thiruvallur
Vaseeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Tirupaasur near Thiruvallur Town in Thiruvallur District of Tamilnadu. The Temple is also called Pasoornathar Temple, Thiruppaasoor temple. Presiding Deity is called as Paasoor Nathar / Pasupathi Nathar / Vaseeswarar. Mother is called as Veyidam Konda Nayaki / Pasupathi Nayaki / Than Kathali / Mohanambal. This Shivastalam is a grand temple within a couple of hours drive from Chennai on the way to Tirupati, fallen into a state of neglect.

The place is also called Thangathalipuram after the name of Goddess Thangathali. Other historical names of this place are Mayapuri, Abhayapuram, Manickapuri and Cholapuram. This Temple is associated with Karikala Cholan and later with the Shaivite Saints who glorified it with their poetry. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This is the 16th of the 32 Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams in the Thondai Naadu in the region of South India.

Ramalinga Vallalar has also revered the temple in his verses. Although the temple structure is in good condition, worship services are offered only once a day, by a priest from Thiruvalangadu nearby. The original complex is believed to have been built by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during the 16th century. In modern times, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamilnadu.

History
The original complex is believed to have been built by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during the 16th century. There are inscriptions from later Chola emperors like Rajaraja Chola I (985–1014), Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120) and Rajendra Chola III (1246–1279). The first among the five inscriptions is the one on the northern wall of the sanctum indicating an agreement between Rajadhirajadeva and the temple priest with regards to the temple service.

The second one is a broken inscription on the Western wall indicating grant of paddy to the temple by a private party during the third regnal year of Kulothunga Chola I (1070-1122 CE). Another inscription on the same wall indicates a gift during his fourth regnal year. The third recorded inscription on the same wall is during the reign of Raja Raja Chola I (985-1014 CE). The last inscription on the Western wall of the temple accounts the grants made for the perpetual lighting of the temple made during the reign of Sri Kulothunga Chola Deva, which could have been done during either of the Kulothunga Cholas.
