Janagai Narayana Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Sholavandan Town in Madurai District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Janagai Narayana Perumal and Mother is called as Janakavalli Thaayar. The temple is situated on the banks of Vaigai River in a green environment. This Temple is situated next to Janagai Mariamman Temple. The Town has been variously referred to as Janaka Puri, Chinna Thanjai, Solaikuruchi, Chaturvedipuram, Anandasakaram, Janakayambathi and Senagapuri.

History
Janagai Narayana Perumal Temple is believed to have been constructed in 13th Century. Rani Mangammal is believed to have constructed a Chatram (free lodge) for pilgrims, in the single agraharam street, around 1700 CE. Funds collected through this Chatram is also believed to have paid for the more famous Mangammal Chatram of Madurai.


The Temple
Presiding Deity is called as Janagai Narayana Perumal. He is a Saligrama idol seen in a standing posture with Sri and Bhoo Devi. The Utsava deity is Rama seen along with Sita and Lakshmana. In earlier times, this temple was referred to as the Rama temple of Sholavandan. Mother is called as Janakavalli Thaayar. She is housed in a Separate Shrine. There are many inscriptions inside the temple. An inscription on the Northern wall of the inner prakara refers to construction of a granite structure in the 5th Century AD.

The Temple remains open from 6.30 am to 12.00 noon and 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
Festivals
10 days Brahmotsavam in Panguni, Aadi Pooram and Pushpa Alankaram on Puratasi Saturdays are the famous festivals celebrated in this Temple with much fanfare.

This is a Prarthana Sthalam for the unmarried and those without children. Those who visit this temple and offer their sincere prayers are likely to have their wishes fulfilled.

The Temple is located at about 300 meters from Sholavandan Railway Feeder Road Bus Stop, 700 meters from Sholavandan Railway Station, 4.5 Kms from Thiruvedagam, 9 Kms from Vadipatti, 25 Kms from Madurai, 24 Kms from Madurai Railway Junction, 24 Kms from Madurai Periyar Bus Stand, 28 Kms from Madurai Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus and 35 Kms from Madurai Airport. Nellai Express from Chennai stops at Sholavandan station (4.45 AM Arrival). There are buses frequently available to Sholavandan from Periyar Bus stand in Madurai.
