Sara Parameswarar Temple, Thirucherai – Religious Significance

Paadal Petra Sthalams:

The Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva Sthalams) glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Thirugnana Sambandar and Appar. This Temple is considered as the 212th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 95th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.

Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar Shrines:

There is a separate shrine for Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar / Kadan Nivartheeswarar (Lord Shiva who relieves from debt) in the western prakaram of this temple. There are three Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar Shrines in Devara Paadal Petra Sthalams. They are;

·        Thyagaraja Temple, Thiruvarur

·        Sara Parameswarar Temple, Thirucherai, Thanjavur

·        Shivaloka Thyagaraja Swami Temple, Achalpuram, Mayiladuthurai

Surya Pooja:

The rays of Sun falls on the presiding deity Lord Sara Parameswarar and on the feet of the Mother during the morning hours on 13th, 14th and 15th of Masi month (February-March). Surya Pooja is performed on these days. Special pujas are performed in the temple during the whole Masi month in the morning hours.
