Temple is considered as Thevara
Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar and Sambandar had a
mention about this
Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 2nd Thirumurai in 39th
Patikam in 5th Song by Sambandar and 6th Thirumurai in 13th
Patikam in 1st Song by Appar. Thirugnana Sambandar refers this place
as Aarai and Umapathi Sivam's Siva Kshetra Kali Venba refers it by naming the deities
of the
Temple as Somakamalambigai and Someswarar. Saint
Arunagirinathar has sang songs in praise of Lord Murugan of this temple in his revered Thirupugazh.

பழையாறும் பாற்குளமுங் கைவிட் டிந்நாள்
பொடியேறு மேனியராய்ப் பூதஞ் சூழப்
புறம்பயம்நம் மூரென்று போயி னாரே.
