Rathnagiriswarar Temple, Thirumarugal, Nagapattinam
Rathnagiriswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Thirumarugal, 10 km East of Nannilam, near NagapatnamTamilnadu. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where two of the most revered Nayanars (Saivite Saints), Appar and Tirugnana Sambandar have sung the glories of this temple. This is the 197th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 80th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This is one of the temples where Lord Shiva enacted his 64 holy plays (Thiruvilayadal).

Etymology
Thirumarugal derived its name from a plantain named Marugal, a type of banana tree found inside the northern-side of the Rathnagiriswarar temple since time immemorial. The specialty of the plantain is that it will not grow anywhere else if its branch is cut and planted. The place is also called ‘Kadalivana Kshethram’ in Sanskrit.
