Aadaleswarar Temple, Kayar, Chengalpattu

Aadaleswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kayar Village in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Aadaleswarar / Vedapureeswarar and Mother is called as Vedanayaki.





History

The Temple is believed to be built by Pallavas and was extensively renovated by Aditya Chola I (870 – 907 CE). There is an inscription of Aditya Chola I on a pillar in this temple. It records the sale of some tax free lands, by the sabha of Kayar in Kumizhi Nadu a subdivision of Amur Kottam, to a certain Thanichelvan of Vandalanjeri in Naraiyur Nadu a subdivision of Chola Nadu, who endowed them to the temple of Aderippidarar for offerings and perpetual lamp to the god Kuthaperumanadigal (Nataraja) in the temple.




The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. Balipeedam and Nandi can be found in front of the temple facing towards the sanctum. The temple consists of sanctum and ardha mandapam. The temple once had a mukha mandapam in the front but only foundation remains now. The pillars of the mukha mandapam with Chola period inscriptions can be seen in the temple premises. Presiding deity is called as Aadaleswarar / Vedapureeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam on a square avudaiyar.




There are no koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Nandi can be seen on the four corners of the roof. The vimana over the sanctum had been lost completely. Mother is called as Vedanayaki. She is housed in a small south facing shrine. Idols of Ganesha and Muruga can be seen in the temple. Sculptures of Dakshinamurthy, Jyeshta Devi and a damaged headless idol goddess can be seen in the temple premises. There is a temple tank situated beside the temple. There are inscriptions dating back to Chola King Aditya Chola can be found in this temple.

The temple is located at about 250 metres from Kayar Bus Stop, 5 Kms from Kattur, 9 Kms from Thiruporur, 10 Kms from Thiruporur Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Kelambakkam, 23 Kms from Guduvanchery Railway Station, 25 Kms from Vandalur, 25 Kms from Chengalpattu, 27 Kms from Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station, 30 Kms from Tambaram, 34 Kms from Chennai Airport and 47 Kms from Chennai. The temple is situated at about 9 Kms from Mambakkam Junction on Vandalur to Kelambakkam route. MTC Bus No 555M from Tambaram to Thiruporur passes through Kayar and Mambakkam. Share Autos and Autos are available from Mambakkam Junction and Thiruporur.
