Mullaivananathar Temple, Thirumullaivasal, Mayiladuthurai
Mullaivananathar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thirumullaivasal Village in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu, India. Presiding Deity is called as Mullaivananathar / Yuthika Parameswarar / Masilamaneeswarar and Mother is called as Anikonda Kothaiyammai / Sathyanantha Soundari. The Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva Sthalams) glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Thirugnana Sambandar. This Temple is considered as the 61st Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 7th Sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This temple is situated near the coast of Bay of Bengal and the sea shore is just half a kilometer away from this temple.

History
The temple is believed to have been built by Sangam era Chola King Killivalavan. The Temple was completely reconstructed during the reign of Later Cholas and extensively renovated during the reign of Vijayanagara Kings and Marathas. The recent consecration ceremony of this temple took place on 07 September 1989. This temple is under the control and administration of the Dharumapuram Adheenam. This place is now called as Then Thirumullaivasal (South Thirumullaivasal), since there is also another Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam near Chennai with same name and to differentiate, this temple is called as Then Thirumullaivasal and temple near Chennai is called as Vada Thirumullaivasal (North Thirumullaivasal).

The temple remains open from 08.00 AM to 12.30 PM and 04.00
PM to 08.00 PM.
Festivals
Masi Magam Theerthavari festival is grandly celebrated
in the temple during the Tamil month of Masi (Feb-Mar). The utsava idols of
Lord Mullaivananathar and Goddess Anikonda Kothaiyammai are taken to seashore
during Theerthavari. Thai Poosam (Jan-Feb), Masi Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) and Avani
Vinayakar Chaturthi (Aug-Sep) are the other festivals celebrated here. Monthly
pradoshas are also observed here.

Prayers
It is believed that the devotees who chant the
Panchakshara mantra (Namashivaya) in the temple on solar and lunar eclipse days
and on new moon days (Amavasya) will attain mukthi (salvation). Students pray
to Lord Shiva for excellence in education.
