Mamsapuram, Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar

Anaindha Potri Temple is located at Sivanthipatti Village in Mamsapuram near
Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar District of Tamilnadu. This is a temple for both
Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This Temple is also called as Adhi Narayanan
Temple or Veerappa Swami Temple.
Legends
Yama
once indulged in matters not related to his assignment and was cursed by his
father Sun God. He came to Earth and worshipped Lord Adhi Narayana
for relief from the curse. Hence, he is granted space opposite to
Lord Vishnu.
The
Temple
This is
a temple for both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Veerappa Swami and Pon Madan
have attributes of Lord Shiva, hence they are custodian deities. Yama once indulged
in matters not related to his assignment and was cursed by his father Sun
God. He came to Earth and worshipped Adhi Narayana for relief from the
curse. Hence, he is granted space opposite to Lord Vishnu. The place and
the temple were established by the Vishwakarma community from Madurai and
Rajapalayam.
The
consecration of the temple took place in the month of Aani (June-July) in the
year 2013. It is strange in this temple that sacred ash is offered as Prasad in
Vishnu shrine. As Vishnu in the temple is believed to be the incarnation
of Lord Surya Narayana, He is praised as Adhi Narayana. Lord Shiva appears
in Linga form. On Shivrathri day, water is fetched from Kuttralam for
abishekam. The temple observes four time puja a day at all shrines.
Lord Shiva
and Lord Vishnu grace the devotees from this single temple. That Yama the Lord
of Death has his shrine opposite to Lord Vishnu adds significance to the
temple. Besides the presiding deities, Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga,
there are also shrines in the temple for sub-deities as Pon Madan, Oonamuthu
and Yama the Lord of Death.

(January-February), last Fridays of each month and Maha Shivrathri in February
March in a festive style.

in wedding matters. Custodian deities Sangili Veerappa Swami, Pon Madan and
Oonamuthu help development in trade and occupations. They also protect the
devotees from the impact of black magic and evil looks of unwanted
persons. People light Deepas on Wednesdays in the shrine of Lord Yama to
overcome fear of death. Realizing their wishes, devotees perform abisheks and
Alankarams to Lords and organize Annadhanam – feeding the devotees and poor.
