This place is called as Then Kurangaduthurai as it is located on the southern side of the river Cauvery. Sugriva worshiped Lord Shiva here. The other Kurangaduthurai is called as Vada Kurangaduthurai as it is located on the northern side of the river Cauvery and Vaali is said to have worshiped Lord Shiva in Vada Kurangaduthurai.
The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Devaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple is the 148th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 31st Sthalam on south side of Cauvery River in Chozha Nadu. Thirugnana Sambandar and Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.
