Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple, Woraiyur – History
The
temple is believed to be in existence from the 7th century. Woraiyur was the
first capital of the Chozhas. The place has the reputation of being the birth
place of Saint Tirupannazhwar one among the celebrated 12 Vaishnavite saints. Thirupaan
Azhwar composed 10 famous verses on Lord Ranganatha called ‘Amalanaathipiraan’
in which he showered the highest praise for the Lord of Srirangam.
Among the
Saivite saints, Pugazh Chalar and Kochengata Cholan were also born here. The
temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment
Board of the Government of Tamilnadu. An Executive officer appointed by the Board manages
the temple along with Srirangam Ranganathaswamy
