Nardana Pureeswarar Temple is a Hindu
temple dedicated to Hindu
God Shiva located at Thalayalangadu in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. The Temple is believed to cure leprosy patients. Presiding
Deity is called as Nardana Pureeswarar / Aadavallar. Mother is called as Balambikai.
Theertham is Changu Theertham and Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa Tree. Praises of the
temple have been sung by Thirunavukkarasar. This is the 210th Devaram Paadal Petra
Shiva Sthalam and 93rd Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in
Chozha Naadu.
Legends
Shiva
danced on Muyalagan Body:
The wicked sages in Dharukavanam (Nartanapuri) performed
a yajna and created a wild elephant to destroy Lord Shiva. Lord simply stripped
the skin of the animal and used it as a blanket. He held a deer in his
hand. Destroyed a demon, Muyalagan by name and danced on his body in this
place.
Kapila
Muni worshipped Shiva:
Kapila Muni worshipped Shiva here to receive the Chinthamani
gem. He is said to have walked on his head to reach here and hence the name Thalayalangadu.
History
This is also a place of importance in Tamil political
history. Pandya king Nedunchezhian defeated the Chera and Chola kings at this place and was honoured as
Thalayalanganathu Cheru (war) Vendra (conquered) Nedunchezhian – Conqueror of
Thalayalanganam.
The
Temple
The Temple is facing south. Presiding Deity is
called as Nardana Pureeswarar / Aadavallar. Lord in the temple is a Swayambumurthy.
Mother is called as Balambikai / Thirumadandaiammai. Moolavar is facing east
and Ambal is facing south. Nandhi is located in a small mandapam. All Mandapams
are of vavvalnethi type. There is no Rajagopuram. Theertham is Changu Theertham
and Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa Tree. Vinayaka, Viswanatha, Sthala Vinayaka,
Muruga, Bhairava and the four Saivite Saints shrines are the other shrines
located in this Temple.
Theertham is situated in front of the temple. After take
bath from the Theertham and lighting lamp for lord will cure the skin
disease. Ambika is located in a separate shrine. The temple is linked
with the Enkan temple. There are also other famous Shiva temples praised
in the hymns around as Enkan, Kudavayil, Peruvelur, Manakkal and Kattoor.

The temple is open from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from
6.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.
Festivals
Thai New Moon day in January-February; Masi Shivarathri
in February-March and Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November are the festivals
celebrated in the temple. The annual Brahmotsavam festival is observed in the
Tamil month of Thai here.
Singers
Saint Thirunavukkarasar had sung the glory of the Lord
of the temple in a meter that runs fast with such melody suiting to the dancing
skill of the Lord as the very name Nardana Pureeswarar – Aada Vallar suggests.
“He is penance himself; he is the Veda and its seed, wearing the crescent moon.
He always retrieve me from sufferings, hiding the Ganga in head and has Mother
Uma as His part, He is all philosophy. I have wasted and lost all the days
being away from him. That Lord is in Thalayalangadu.” This is the 210th
Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 93rd Sthalam on the south
side of River Cauvery in Chozha Naadu.
Prayers
People pray here for cure from serious skin diseases as
leprosy and for child boon. They bathe in the sacred spring and pray to Lord
and Mother. Devotees perform abishek, special pujas and offer vastras to Lord
and Mother.

Connectivity
The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Enkan, 8 Kms
from Kudavasal, 16 Kms from Thiruvarur, 27 Kms from Kumbakonam, 8 Kms from Thirukkannamangai,
8 Kms from Srivanchiyam and 110 Kms from Trichy. The Temple is located on Thiruvarur
to Kumbakonam route. From bus-stand and cross a small bridge of two canals to
reach this temple. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruvarur and
Nearest Airport is located Trichy.
