Cherugudi Sukshmapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Cherugudi in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Sukshma Pureeswarar. His consort is known as Mangala Nayaki. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar. This is the 177th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 60th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Historical name of this place is Thiruchirukudi. The famed Shiva Sthalam Thiruveezhimizhalai is located nearby.

The Temple
The temple is facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram. The inner area is very spacious. Lord Shiva in the temple is a Swayambumurthy Linga made of sand and called as Sukshma Pureeswarar / Mangalanathar / Sirukudi Eesar. Moolavar is Swayambu made of sand and there is no abishekam & only sambarani thailam is applied and he is always covered with Kuvalai. Mother is called as Mangala Nayaki / Mangalambikai. She is in standing posture with abhaya hastham.

Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa and Theertham is Mangala Theertham. There are shrines for Lords Mangala Vinayaka and Muruga in the prakara. Navagraha-9 planets shrine is located in the front mandapam. The Navagraha (9 planets) mandapam in the temple is different. Child Saint Thirugnana Sambandar is also among the planets as their beloved one. The added significance is that Lord Bhairava and Lord Vinayaka are in this mandapam.

Temple Opening Time
The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.
Maha Shivarathri in February-March, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Maasi Magam and Arudra Dharisanam are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
Literary Mention
Lord of the temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Gnana Sambandar. This is the 177th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 60th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.
Tirugnanasambandar describes the feature of the deity as:
தேனமர் பொழிலணி சிறுகுடி மேவிய
மானமர் கரமுடை யீரே
மானமர் கரமுடை யீருமை வாழ்த்திய
ஞானசம் பந்தன தமிழே.
It is the faith of the devotees that praying to Lord and Mother would ensure all auspiciousness in family. Devotees perform abishek and archanas to Lord and Mother offering vastras.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms north of Kadagambadi, 2 Kms from Thirupampuram, 6 Kms from Thiruveezhimizhalai, 12 Kms from Vadamattam, 14 Kms from Konerirajapuram, 30 Kms from Eravancheri, 11 Kms from Poonthottam, 1.5 Kms from Anniyur, 12 Kms from Therazendur, 30 Kms from Kumbakonam, 24 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 30 Kms from Thiruvarur and 130 Kms from Trichy. The temple can be reached from Kadagambadi through buses running from Kumbakonam to Karaikkal via Poonthottam. The Temple is located to the north of Kadagambadi.
No vehicle facility is available here. The devotees have to walk the distance. To avoid inconvenience, those coming from Kumbakonam should get down at Eravancheri. Those coming from Karaikkal, Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur routs may get down at Poonthottam. Autos and cabs are available from both ends – Eravancheri and Poonthottam.
