Chennakesava
Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in George Town area of Chennai, the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Chenna Kesava Perumal and
Mother is called as Chenkamala Valli Thayar. This is one of the three temples that were popular even before the
arrival of the British. This Temple along with Chenna Malleeswarar Temple is
called as Twin Temples of Chennai or Pattinam Temples.
The temple was the first to be
built in the new settlement; since the construction of Madras city by the British
East India Company.
Chenna Kesava Perumal is considered as the patron deity of Chennai,
Chenna Pattanam may be named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The word
'Chenni' in Tamil means face, and the temple was regarded as the face of the
city. The original Chenna Kesava temple was located
even in the 17th century AD in the location where the Madras High Court is
currently located.
