Kandaswamy Temple, Georgetown – Festivals
The annual Brahmotsavam of Kandakottam Kandaswamy Temple is celebrated in Thai (January-February). On Thai Poosam Festival (the day of the star Poosam in January-February), there is a procession of Muruga / Subramanya to the Kachabeswarar Temple in George Town for the float festival. Vasantha Utsavam the spring festival and Vaikasi Visakam on the day of the star Vaishaka are celebrated in Vaikasi (May-June). Arudra Dharisanam on the day of the star Thiruvadirai, the night when Shiva performs his cosmic dance, is celebrated in Margazhi (December-January). The Utsavar or processional image of Lord Nataraja is taken out in a grand procession through many streets in the area.
Skanda Shashti, the birth of Muruga / Subramanya is another festival celebrated here. It occurs six days after Deepavali. The Laksharchana (one-lakh chanting of the god’s names) in this Temple is very popular and thousands of devotees participate in this event. Panguni Uthiram, Aadi Pooram, Adi Kiruthigai, Aani Thirumanjanam, Vinayagar Chathurthi, Navarathri, Aippasi Annabishekam, Karthigai Deepam, Thai Pongal, Masi Magam, Maha Shivarathri, Telugu New Year, Tamil New Year, Monthly Kiruthigai, Monthly Sashti, Pournami, Amavasya, Sankatahara Chaturthi and Monthly Pradoshams are also celebrated here. Arutperunjothi Agaval is being sung on every Thursday evening and Jyothi Darshnam will be shown.
