Kumara Kottam Subramanya Swamy Temple, Sowcarpet, George Town, Chennai
Kumara Kottam Subramanya Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located in Sowcarpet in George Town area of Chennai, the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is situated at NSC Bose Road in Sowcarpet Area. It is exactly located at junction of NSC Bose Road and Kalathi Pillaiyar Street. This temple is also called as Vani Subramanya Temple.



Legends
It is believed that Lord Subramanyar of this Temple was worshipped by Sage Agasthiar.


The Temple
The temple has two entrances, one at the east direction and another at the south direction. The south entrance with three tiered Rajagopuram is considered as the main entrance. Both the entrances have towers with interesting stucco images. The sanctum is east facing. It enshrines Shiva Subramanya along with his two consorts Valli and Deivayanai. Instead of his regular vahana of peacock, elephant is found as Subramanya's vahana. Nevertheless, peacock is also found outside the enclosure near the flag staff.



There is a separate shrine for Lord Arunachaleswarar represented in the form of Linga. His Consort, Abithakujambal is found in the south facing shrine. Valli and Deivayanai (Devasena) are found in separate east facing shrines. Valli, who is found in the separate shrine, has four arms, whereas Devasena, the daughter of Lord Indra, has only two arms. Ideally, it should the other way around. Valli, the human, is seen with four arms, whereas Devasena, the daughter of Indra, is seen with two arms. All these shrines are located on either side of the sanctum.


There are shrines of Ganesha, the idols of Nalvar, Nava Veeras and Agastya in the Temple premises. The idols of Dhanavanthri and Pamban Swamigal are situated at the entrance. The other end of the entrance to the enclosure has Bhairava and Dwara Ganesha Idols. The inner entrance of the south tower has the idols of Arunagirinathar and Veerabhadra.


The prakaram has lot of shrines and idols of Valampuri Vinayaka, Ganesha, Chandikeswarar, Navagraha, Palani Andavan with Idumban and Kadambam at the entrance, Utsava Idols of Shanmukha with his consorts Valli and Devasena, Nataraja & Sivakami. Bala Vinayaka, Naga Skanda, Bala Murugan, Narayani, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga, Dakshina Murti are the niche images found in the temple.


The pillars all over the temple have very interesting and unique images such as Matcha Samhara Murti, Ganesha holding conch and discus, Herambha Ganapati, Sadasiva Murti along with Brahma and Vishnu, Vishnu emerging out of Shiva Linga and Sarabeswara. The Rahukala (4:30 PM to 6:00PM) Sarabeswara Pooja during every Sunday is very special here.


Connectivity
The Temple is situated at NSC Bose Road in Sowcarpet Area. It is exactly located at junction of NSC Bose Road and Kalathi Pillaiyar Street. The Temple is located at about 200 meters from Elephant Gate Bus Stop, 1.5 Kms from Parrys Corner Bus Stop, 2 Kms from Chennai Beach Railway Station, 2 Kms from Basin Bridge Junction, 1.5 Kms from Mannady Metro Station, 2 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station, 5 Kms from Egmore Railway Station, 12 Kms from Koyambedu Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus and 20 Kms from Chennai Airport. The Temple is located very close to the Mannady Metro Station and Chennai Central Railway Station. You can proceed on foot to this Temple from the station. From other parts of the city, you can take a Cabs, Auto Rickshaw, Bus, Local Trains and Metro Trains to reach the Temple.
