Masjid Mamoor is a Mosque
located at Muthialpet in George
Town area of Chennai, the capital of the South
Indian state of Tamil
Nadu. This Masjid is
built by Arcot Nawab Muhammad Ali Walajah (AD 1749-1795) during 17th
century. It was rebuilt in granite by the Nawab of Carnatic in the late 19th century. Since
then, the mosque has been frequently renovated. This mosque and Triplicane Big
Mosque both were same design and built together by Nawab.
Due to the geographical
location and central business district, this mosque is surrounded by commercial
establishments and lost its majestic look and being considered as one of the
commercial building in Angappan Naickan Street. It stretches from Angappan
street and covers entire width upto Linghi street. It is also commonly referred
to as the big mosque. Recent architectural additions are the unique two-pillar
supports and the outer walls. Over five thousand worshippers can be
accommodated in this mosque at a time.
The Mosque is located at about 500 meters from Chennai
Beach Bus Stop, 650 meters from Parrys Corner Bus Stop, 1 Km from Mannady Metro
Station, 3 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station, 5 Kms from Egmore Railway
Station, 13 Kms from Koyambedu Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus and 23 Kms from
Chennai Airport. The Mosque is located close to the Mannady Metro Station. You
can proceed on foot to this Mosque from the station. From other parts of the
city, you can take a Cabs, Auto Rickshaw, Bus, Local Trains and Metro Trains to
reach the Mosque.
