Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple, Pandur, Mayiladuthurai

Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Pandur Village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy and Mother is called as Balambigai. There are five Vaidyanatha Swamy Temples around Vaitheeswaran Koil called as Pancha Vaidyanatha Kshetrams. This Temple is one among them. It is believed that this Temple was constructed before the present Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple in Vaitheeswaran Koil. This Temple is considered as one of the Thiruvasaga Sthalams.

Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva here:

It is said that Lord Krishna advised Pancha Pandavas to worship Lord Vaidyanatha of this Temple to overcome an incurable disease.

Kadan Nivarthi Pooja:

It is believed that Harichandra worshipped Lord Shiva of this Temple to get rid of his debts. In memory of this event, Kadan Nivarthi Pooja is performed on Third Saturday of Chithirai Month.

Emperor Nala worshipped Lord Shiva here:

Emperor Nala was bitten by Karkodaka, one of the Ashta Nagas, His color got changed to black. A sage advised him to visit this temple for cure. As advised, he came and worshipped Lord Shiva here. Lord Shiva blessed him with his original appearance.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch. The entrance arch stucco images of Lord Shiva and Parvathy flanked by Nandis and Bhooda Ganas. Balipeedam and Nandi can be found immediately after the entrance facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Maha Mandapam, Artha Mandapam and Sanctum.

Shrines of Vinayaga and Muruga can be found at the entrance of Maha Mandapam. Durga Shrine is situated close to Murugan Shrine. Presiding Deity is called as Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamoorthy can be found in the Koshta. Chandikeswarar shrine can be found in his usual location.

Mother is called as Balambigai. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to left side of the Sanctum in Maha Mandapam. There is a separate shrine for Saneeswarar in the temple premises. As Saneeswarar is in separate shrine, there is no shrine for Navagrahas in this Temple. Special Poojas are performed to Saneeswarar during Saturdays and Saturn transit.

Shrines and idols of Vinayaga, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Suryan, and Bhairavar can be seen in the temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa tree. It is situated on the northern prakaram. Shiva Lingam with Nandi and Naga Idol can be found below Vilwa Tree. Theertham associated with this Temple is Surya Pushkarini. It is situated opposite to the Temple.

Festivals

Panguni Brahmotsavam, Navaratri, Shivaratri, Monthly Pradoshams, Saturdays, Saturn Transit and Aippasi Annabishekam are the festivals celebrated here.

Prayers

Devotees pray here to get relief from debts, skin diseases and planetary Doshams. Devotees with skin diseases will take bath in Surya Pushkarini and then pray to Lord Shiva with Neelotpava flowers.

The Temple is located at about 2 Kms from Ponnur, 5 Kms from Kali, 5 Kms from Nidur Railway Station, 8 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station, 9 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 9 Kms from Mayiladuthurai New Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Old Bus Stand and 128 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Mayiladuthurai to Kali Bus Route. Town Bus facilities are available from Mayiladuthurai and Kali to reach this Temple.
