Raghaveswarar Temple, Kanchipuram
Veera Raghaveswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is situated amidst the paddy fields, at the back side of Kanchi Kudil at Putheri Street (.S.V.N Pillai Street) of Periya Kanchipuram. This is one of the 108 Shiva temples mentioned in Kanchi Puranam. The Temple is also called as Veeraraghavesam and Lakshmanesam.
Legends
After the abduction of Mother Sita, Lord Rama met Sage
Agastya and poured his grief to Sage Agastya. Sage Agastya advised him to visit
Kanchipuram and worship Lord Shiva. As per his advice, Lord Rama installed this
Linga and worshipped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was immensely pleased with Lord
Rama prayers and bestowed him with divine weapons like Pasupathasthiram, Brahmashthiram
and Narayansthiram. Lord Shiva also granted him a boon which would offer him
great strength to overcome his enemies and reclaim his consort Sita, return to
Ayodhya and reign as king of Ayodhya. There is an idol worshipped by Rama’s
brother Lakshmana (by the side of idol established by Rama). These idols are
found side by side in the temple.
The Temple
The temple was lost completely, only a small shed is
housing the presiding deities. Presiding Deities Veera Raghaveswarar and
Lakshmaneswar are housed in the shed in the form of Lingams side by side. Kamakshi
Amman of Kanchi Kamakshi temple is considered as the consort of Lord Shiva.
