Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar Temple, Kanchipuram

Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar and Mother is called as Kamakshi. The Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar temple is situated near Thirumettrali Temple, one among the Paadal Petra Sthalams in Thondai Nadu.



Legends

Thirugnanasambanthar Naayanmaar was singing songs in praise of Thirumetralinaadhar outside the temple. Lord wanted to hear out the song distinctly, came a little forward from the place he occupied in the temple and enjoyed hearing the song being sung by saint Thirugnanasambanthar. He transformed himself in to a Linga. Hence, he came to be called as Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar. There is a Temple built for Sambandar in the place where Sambandar stood and sang the songs.


The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with a single tiered Rajagopuram.  Nandi housed in a small mandapam, and Balipeedam can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Ardha Mandapam and Mukha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamoorthy, Vishnu, Vinayaga, Lingodbhava and Durga are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar can be found in his usual location. Kamakshi Amman of Kanchi Kamakshi temple is considered as the consort of Lord Shiva. There is a well in the temple premises.
