Nambuvarkanbar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nangur Village near Sirkazhi Town in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Nambuvarkanbar / Bhaktavachaleswarar and Mother is called as Nampiriyal. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur. This temple is considered as Parihara Sthalam for Budhan doshas. The Temple is situated close to Nangur Higher Secondary School.

History

The temple is said to have been in existence from 6th century CE. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards west with an entrance arch. The entrance arch has stucco image of Rishabaroodar. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found immediately after the entrance arch, facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. Presiding deity is called as Nambuvarkanbar / Bhaktavachaleswarar and is facing west. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Durga, Lingodbhava and Dakshinamoorthy are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

The Dakshinamoorthy is depicted with 12 Rasis. Hence, he is praised as Rasi Mandala Dakshinamoorthy. The presiding deity of Kailasanathar Temple (Bheema Peedam) and the presiding deity of Sundareswarar Temple (Bava Peedam) are kept at the entrance of the sanctum. Mother is called as Nampiriyal. She is housed in a separate south facing  shrine.  Shrines of Vinayaga, Murugan and two Bana Lingams can be seen in the prakaram.

Festivals

The Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur celebrates the Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival in Rohini star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi similar to the Ekadasa Garuda Seva of Thirunangur Divyadesams. The Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival was celebrated in grand manner during Chitra Pournami in ancient times and was discontinued in the 20th century. The ardent devotees of Lord Shiva revived this festival in 2016 and is now being celebrated every year. The Lords of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur participates in this festival.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Annankoil, 10 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil, 10 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil Railway Station, 11 Kms from Poompuhar, 11 Kms from Sirkazhi, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 13 Kms from Sembanarkoil, 15 Kms from Thirukadaiyur, 23 Kms from Tharangambadi, 23 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 146 Kms from Trichy Airport. Buses are available from Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai only at specific hours. Regular buses are available to Annankoil from Sirkazhi. The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Annankoil. The Temple is situated on Sirkazhi – Annankoil – Nangur – Thiruvengadu route.
