Nayanavaratheswarar Temple, Nainipuram, Mayiladuthurai

Nayanavaratheswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nainipuram Village near Nangur in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Nayanavaratheswarar and Mother is called as Nalinambiga. Nainipuram is also called as Melnangur. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur.

History

The temple is said to have been in existence from 6th century CE but was lost completely to the ravages of time. The temple is built recently in a smaller level. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards west. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum and ardha mandapam. Presiding deity is called as Nayanavaratheswarar and is facing west. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Durga, Lingodbhava and Dakshinamoorthy are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Nalinambiga. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine to the right side of the sanctum. Shrines of Vinayaga and Murugan can be seen in the temple premises.

Festivals

The Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur celebrates the Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival in Rohini star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi similar to the Ekadasa Garuda Seva of Thirunangur Divyadesams. The Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival was celebrated in grand manner during Chitra Pournami in ancient times and was discontinued in the 20th century. The ardent devotees of Lord Shiva revived this festival in 2016 and is now being celebrated every year. The Lords of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur participates in this festival.

The Temple is located at about 4 Kms from Annankoil, 11 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil, 11 Kms from Sembanarkoil, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 12 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil Railway Station, 12 Kms from Poompuhar, 13 Kms from Thirukadaiyur, 14 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 20 Kms from Tharangambadi, 21 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 147 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Sirkazhi to Thirukadaiyur route. Regular buses are available from Sirkazhi, Thirukadaiyur and Tharangambadi.
