Swarnapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kathiruppu Village near Sirkazhi Town in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Swarnapureeswarar and Mother is called as Swarnambigai. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 11th century by Cholas. Kathiruppu was called as Thirusornapuram during ancient period. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with three tiered rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dhwaja Sthambam and Nandi can be seen immediately after the rajagopuram facing towards the sanctum. Kodimara Vinayaga can be seen at the base of the Dhwaja Sthambam. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antrala and maha mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Swarnapureeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam.

Dakshinamoorthy and eight armed Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar can be seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Swarnambigai. She is housed in a separate east facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum. She is four armed and in standing posture. Her upper hands hold lotus & rudraksha mala and lower hands shows abhaya and uru hastha.

Shrines & Idols of Vinayaga, Veena Dakshinamoorthy, Vasuki, Sapta Matrikas, Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Gaja Lakshmi, Bhairavar, Saneeswarar, Suryan, Katyayi Lingam can be seen in the temple premises. Sthala Vrikshams are Vanni, Neem and Pomegranate Trees. These Vrikshams are situated on the northern prakaram. Theertham associated with this temple is Swarna Pushkarini. It is situated on the north eastern corner of the temple premises.

The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 08.00 AM and 05.30 PM to 07.00 PM.

Festivals

10 days Vaikasi Brahmotsavam (May-Jun) is the most famous festival celebrated here. Kanakabhishekam is performed to Sundarar with coins during Vaikasi Visakam day. Ekadina Laksharchana is performed to Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvathy during Akshaya Tritiya. 108 Shankhabhishekam is performed to Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvathy on Karthigai Mondays. Navaratri, Shivaratri, Karthigai and pradoshams are also observed here. 

The Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur celebrates the Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival in Rohini star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi similar to the Ekadasa Garuda Seva of Thirunangur Divyadesams. The Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival was celebrated in grand manner during Chitra Pournami in ancient times and was discontinued in the 20th century. The ardent devotees of Lord Shiva revived this festival in 2016 and is now being celebrated every year. The Lords of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur participates in this festival.

Prayers

When the women from this village buy new jewelry, they kept it at the feet of the goddess for blessings and then take it away and wear it. It is believed that this practice will bless them with more gold in their home. Devotees light 27 lamps around the Sthala Vrikshams (Vanni & Neem intertwined together like a single tree) on Pournami and circumbulate the trees for removing obstacles in marriage alliances. Also, devotees perform Kala Parvathy Yagna to Lord Shiva here for marriage boon. Devotees worship Lord Shiva for relief from Naga dosha and Kala Sarpa dosha.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Annankoil, 9 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil, 10 Kms from Sirkazhi, 10 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 10 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil Railway Station, 12 Kms from Poompuhar, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 12 Kms from Sembanarkoil, 14 Kms from Thirukadaiyur, 22 Kms from Tharangambadi, 22 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 145 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Sirkazhi to Thirukadaiyur route. Regular buses are available from Sirkazhi, Thirukadaiyur and Tharangambadi.
