Arulmigu Koniamman Temple
Arulmigu Koniamman Temple is located in Coimbatore district of
Tamil Nadu. Goddess Shakti Amman is the presiding deity here in the divine form
of Arulmigu Koniamman.
Arulmigu koniamman swamy temple is situated in Coimbatore in Big
Bazaar Street Town hall. The temple is situated in the centre of the Coimbatore
town. The history of the temple and the divinity goes once again to 13th
Century A.D.
The main festivals of koniamman temple are Ther festival;
Pouchattu, Akinichatti, Thiruvillakku Pooja, Theppam Urchavam and Vasantha
Vizha are some of the major festivals held in this temple. Koniamman Temple is

History
In the past Tamilnadu was divided, Cheranadu, Cholanadu, Pandiya
nadu, Kongunadu & Thondai nadu. Today’s Coimbatore District, Nilgiris
District, Erode District, Salem District, Karur District and Palani Taluk were
called Kongu nadu.
The city of Coimbatore which is proudly named as the
"Manchester of South" India has its cultural and religious heritage.
The word Kongu nadu itself denotes the composition of temples in the region.
Koniamman temple and Dhandumariamman temple are considered as two eyes of the city
Coimbatore. The history of the temple and deity dates back to 13th century A.C.
Arulmigu Koniamman Temple was built by Covan, a leader of Irula
group 600 years ago. The village was called as Covanputhur during that period
later on changed as Coimbatore. A fort was built later around the Koniamman
Temple by Illangosar tribe fearing the invasion of Cheras. They built the
temple of Goddess Koniamman to guard this fort. The temple was renovated by the
king of Mysore dynasty later and consecrated Goddess Koniamman.
Goddess Koniamman is giving darshan in the form of
Mahishasuramardhini. She holds trident, Udukkai, sword, conch, scull, fire,
discus, bell in her eight hands. Navagrahas are installed with their consorts
in the right side of the main shrine. The other deities behind the sanctum
sanctorum are Lord Panchamuga Vinayagar, Lord Muruga with His consorts Goddess
Valli and Deivanai. Abhisheka Theertham of this temple is to be considered as a
boon for ill-affected people. There are Neem, Vilwa, Nagalingam and Arasamaram
as holy trees in the temple.
Poojas and Festivals
The Temple is kept opened from 6.00 A.M. to 12.30 P.M. in the
morning and from 4.00 P.M. to 9.00 P.M. in the evening.
All the daily rituals are performed in the temple. Oonjal festival
is celebrated during Aadi month (July-August). The annual festival of this
temple starts in the Tamil month Masi which is celebrated for 14 days. The
annual car festival is considered to be one of the most important festivals
here.
14 day festival in Masi (February-March), All Tamil months,
Poornima, Fridays in Aadi month (July-August), Fridays in Thai month
(January-February), Navarathri during September-October, Dhanur Pujas in
Margazhi (December-January), Pongal almost falling on January 14 each year, and
Deepavali in October-November are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
