Dakshinamurthy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Pattamangalam Village in Thiruppattur Taluk in Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Sundareswarar and Mother is called as Meenakshi. Though the temple is a Shiva temple, but importance is given to the Dakshinamoorthy shrine. Pattamangalam is situated between Manimutharu river and Pambar river.

The original temple is believed to be built by the Pandyas, but the current structure was built in 19th century CE by Nagarathar community.

The temple remains open from 006.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and 04.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m.


Aavani Vinayaka Chathurthi (Aug-Sep), Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct), Karthikai Deepam (Nov-Dec) and Masi Magam & Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) are the festivals celebrated. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.

Literary Mention

This temple finds mention in the hymns of Thiruvasagam written by 9th century CE Tamil saint and poet, Manickavasagar has sung about this temple in his Thiruvasagam.


This temple is considered as Guru Parihara Sthalam. Devotees circumambulate the shrine of Lord Dakshinamoorthy and the banyan tree 108 times for happy life, blessed with good health, for child boon and prosperity. Devotees circumambulate the temple thrice to realize their wish, five times to succeed in efforts, seven times to become noble, develop high ideals and peace of mind,  nine for a child boon, eleven for longevity, fifteen for prosperity and 1008 times to win in love affairs and get the girl of their choice.

The temple is located at about 7 Kms from Thirukoshtiyur, 10 Kms from Thiruppattur, 10 Kms from Thiruppattur Bus Stand, 23 Kms from Karaikudi, 26 Kms from Karaikudi Junction Railway Station, 30 Kms from Kalayarkoil, 32 Kms from Sivaganga, 69 Kms from Madurai and 75 Kms from Madurai Airport. The temple is situated at about 7 Kms to the east of Thirukoshtiyur on the Thiruppattur to Sivaganga route. Buses are available frequently from Tirupathur to Pattamangalam.
