Kayarohanaswami Temple, Nagapattinam
The Kayarohanaswami
Temple is a Hindu
temple dedicated to Lord
Siva situated in the
town of Nagapattinam in Tamilnadu, India. The presiding deity is known as Kayarohana and his
consort is Nilayathakshi. The temple has been in existence from the 6th
century AD and has been praised by the Nayanmars Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar. The temple has been constructed by the Lakolisa cult
which originated in Gujarat and their only other temple in Tamilnadu is
at Kanchipuram. The idol of Thyagaraja in the temple is made of lapis
lazuli.
The
temple is a Shakti Peetham and better known by her name as Neelayadakshi Kovil
(temple). Special pujas are performed in this shrine on Poornima (full moon
days) and a milk pudding (Payasam / kheer) is offered as Naivedhyam (special
food offered to a Hindu deity as part of a worship ritual, before eating it).
As the temple is on the seashore, it is said that Shiva is ruling the region as
a king and so the name Shiva Rajadhani (capital of Shiva’s kingdom) is also
attributed to this temple.
This is
one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. This is the 82nd Shiva temple on the
southern banks of the Cauvery that is praised in the Thevaram, a collection of
hymns sung by Saint Sambandar. The Lingam is not one of the original lingams,
which was stolen ages ago, and recently replaced by a Gomedakam lingam.
