Thripuranthakeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Coovum Village near Perambakkam in Thiruvallur District of Tamilnadu. The place is also called as Thiruvirkolam. Presiding Deity is called as Tripuranthaka Swami / Thiruvirkolanathar. This Shiva lingam is not touched by human hands, not even by the priests, as it is “Theenda Thirumeni”. The color of Shiva Linga changes on its own as per the seasons. Mother is called as Tripuranthaka Nayagi / Thiripurasundari.










This temple is believed to have been built by the kings of the Chola dynasty. The temple is situated at the origin point of the Coovum river with its sparkling and clear waters. Sambandhar has revered the temple in his verses in Devaram. This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 14th Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Nadu. There is separate set of Pancha Bootha Sthalams around Chennai and out of that, this is the “Agni” Sthalam.

Inscriptions
Koovam was known as Madurantakanallur during the rule of Cholas and later got changed to Thyaga Samudra Nallur. There is an inscription dated to Rajendra II (1057 AD) informs about the sale of a land for developing a feeder canal to the Koovam tank (Called as Tribhuvanamadevi Pereri during Chola Period). An inscription dated to Kulothunga I (1112 AD) talks about the fishing  in the lake and paddy taxes to carry out the repair of the Tribhuvanamadevi Pereri. There are various inscriptions by Rajaraja II, Vijayaganda Gopala Deva and Konerinmaikondan talks about the grants for conducting festivals at the temple.

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Festivals
Almost all important festivals are observed in this temple. The major festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner are – 10 day Chithirai Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May), 10 day Aadippooram festival to Goddess Parvathi in the Tamil month of Adi (July-August),  Thai Poosam in the Tamil month of Thai (January-February), Thiru Karthikai in the Tamil month of Karthikai (November-December), Annabishekam in the Tamil month of Aipasi (October-November), Arudra dharisanam & Thiruvathirai in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January) and Maha Shivarathri in the Tamil month of Masi (February-March). Monthly Pradosham is also regularly observed. Deepavali, New Year Day according to the English calendar and Tamil calendar, Pongal are also celebrated in the temple.

Prayers
Worshipping Lord Tripuranthaka enhances the personality of the devotee, relieves him/her from evil and arrogant behaviours. It makes family life more loving. Devotees also pray to Lord Achirutha Vinayaka who damaged the Rath of Lord Shiva before starting any new undertakings. Devotees perform special abisheks to Lord and Mother offering vastras. It is believed that worshiping the lord here can relieve devotees from the sins of their previous birth. It is also believed that any sort of misunderstanding between husband and wife can be resolved if they worship the lord here.
