Kandeeswarar
Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Velangudi Village
near Karaikudi in Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called
as Kandeeswarar and Mother is called as Kamakshi Amman. The Temple is considered as
Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple. This
Temple is one of the nine temples of the Chettinad Nagarathar community.
History
It is
believed that Pandya Kinga gifted this Temple to Nagarathar Community in 718
AD. Nagarathar Community looking after this Temple belongs to Kazhani
Nallukudaiyar Pirivu. Its members have no Sub-classification. The population
here is very low and this is believed to be the result of an ancient curse.
The Temple
Presiding
Deity is called as Kandeeswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of
Lingam. Mother is called as Kamakshi Amman. She is housed in a separate shrine.
There is a Yoga Dhandam located near to the idols of Nataraja and Shivagami in
the Temple premises. There is a separate shrine for Bhairava in the Temple.
There is a water body to the south side of the Temple.
Sorketta
Vinayagar Temple and Medha Dakshinamurthy Temple is situated on the western
bank of the water body. There is a Temple for Lord Vishnu, located to the west
of the Temple. Lord Vishnu with his consorts Bhumi Devi and Neela Devi is
gracing the devotees in this Temple.

The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.30 PM
and 05.00 PM to 09.00 PM.

The Temple is considered as
Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about
this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 7th Thirumurai in 12th
Patikam in 3rd Song.
