Chengalvaraya Swamy Temple is
a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruthani Hills in
Thiruthani Town in Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Chengalvaraya
Swamy / Chengazhuneer Varai Arayan. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu
Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple. Thiruthani was also called as
Kaaviyangiri and Kazhuneer Kundram in ancient period.
The Temple
The Temple is situated on
Thiruthani Hill. The Temple is located at the back side of Thiruthani Murugan
Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Chengalvaraya Swamy / Chengazhuneer Varai
Arayan. This Temple is actually a Mandapam. This Mandapam consists of Shrines
of Lingam and Thanthondri Vinayagar. This Lingam is praised by Appar in his
Hymns.
Literary Mention
The
Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar
had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 6th Thirumurai
in 13th Patikam in 4th Song.

The Temple is located at about
700 meters from Thiruthani Murugan Temple, 2 Kms from Thiruthani Bus Stand, 2
Kms from Thiruthani Railway Station, 14 Kms from Arakkonam, 23 Kms from Sholinghur,
42 Kms from Thiruvallur, 87 Kms from Chennai Airport and 93 Kms from Chennai.
Thiruthani is well connected to Chennai, Vellore, Thiruvallur and other parts
of Tamil Nadu by Roadways and Railways. The Temple can be reached after coming
out from the Thiruthani Murugan Temple and take the steps behind the sanctum,
you will see a pond on the left side and a small mandapam on the right side.
This Shrine is located in that Mandapam.
