Aakkoor Thanthondreeswarar Temple, Nagapattinam
Akkur Thanthondreeswarar Temple is a Hindu
temple located at Akkur in Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu, India. The presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Thanthondriappar. His consort is known
as Valnedunkanni. Lord Thanthondreeswarar is a swayambumurthy. This is the
birth place of Sirapuli Nayanar, one among the 63 celebrated Saivite
Nayanmars. He attained salvation also here.
This is
also one of the sacred places where Lord Shiva granted Wedding Darshan to Sage
Agasthya. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the
early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanars Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar.

The
Temple
Presiding
deity is called as Thanthondriappar or Thanthondri Eswarar. Urchavar is
Aayirathil Oruvar (one in a thousand). Mother is called as Valnedunkanni. Thala
Vrikshams are Kondrai, Arecanut and Vilwa. Theertham of this Temple is Kumuda
theertham. Aagama of this Temple is Karana Agama. Lord Muruga in the temple is
praised in the Thirupugazh hymns of Arunagiriar.
This
Shivastalam is a “Maadakkovil” built by Ko Chengata Cholan, at an elevation,
which is also known as Shankharanyam. This temple is also known as Thanthonri
maadam – that which appeared on a self-made hill.
Sirappuli Nayanar:
This is
the birth place of Sirapuli Nayanar, one among the 63 celebrated Saivite
Nayanmars. He attained salvation also here. Sirappuli
Nayanar is associated with
this temple. A shrine is dedicated to him, in the temple.

Festivals
Thiruvadhirai
in Margazhi (December-January) is the important festival in the temple. Monthly
Shivarathri, Pradosham. Karthikai deepam, Poornimas are the festive days in the
temple.

Mention
Saint
Gnanasambandar had praised the Lord of the temple in his Thevaram hymns. In the
hymns, the saint says, “My Lord in Thanthondri Madam graces with his Than
Kondrai garland and the sacred ashes, He rose furious against Yama the Lord of
Death and made him tremble, He is the Lord of Vedas and its six Angas and the
rules for performing the yajnas.” This is the 46th temple on the southern bank
of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.
Tirugnanasambandar
describes the feature of the deity as:
நன்மையா னாரணனும் நான்முகனுங் காண்பரிய
தொன்மையான் தோற்றங்கே டில்லாதான் தொல்கோயில்
இன்மையாற் சென்றிரந்தார்க் கில்லையென்னா தீந்துவக்குந்
தன்மையாற் ஆக்கூரிற் றான்றோன்டி மாடமே.

Prayers
This is
a place considered sacred for performing remedial rituals for removal of any
evil and adverse effects faced by the devotees. Devotees perform Parvathi
Homa to conclude wedding proposals successfully. Those seeking child boon
perform Santhana Gopalakrishna Homa.
For
removal of adverse effects on children, people use to offer their kids in
adoption to other, and get them back again. Those seeking child boon perform
archanas with white lotus flowers.
People
also celebrate their 60th birth day in the temple. Devotees
perform Sahasranama (chanting 1000 names of the Lord) archana to Lord Bhairava
on the Ashtami the 8th day of the new moon fortnight.
