History
The Village was called as Karkateswaram, Thirundudevankudi Kudi and Thiru Nandankoil during ancient times. It is speculated that in the days of its glory, this village would have been a medical care center with an Ayurvedic dispensary, providing herbal remedies to various ailments. The Mother shrine was built in 1117 CE as per the inscriptions. Inscriptions belonging to Chola Kings Rajaraja, Kulothunga-I, Vikrama Chola, Rajadhiraja II and Queen Chembian Maadevi can be found in this Temple.
No later inscriptions are seen, and the temple seems to have gone into a state of insignificance after the Chola rule. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE). The last consecration ceremony took place on 06.07.2003.
