Ramalinga Swamy Temple, Panagudi, Thirunelveli
Ramalinga
Swamy Temple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located at Panagudi Village in
Thirunelveli District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Ramalinga
Swamy and Mother is called as Sivagami Ambal. The Temple is located in the
heart of the town near the Bus stand. The Temple is believed to build in
Panagudi by Uthama Pandyan of Tenkasi lineage during 14th Century.
Hence the village is called as Uthamapandyapuram in olden days. In its initial
days the temple was called as Nambi Singa Perumal Temple.
Fish
Symbol had been engraved on top of the Chapparam located outside the temple
attests that the temple was built by Pandyas. Locals believe that there was an
underground tunnel in this temple and it ends in the well located at the
backside of Sacred Heart School. It is believed that kings used this tunnel
during emergency period. The temple at present is painted in a traditional
Tamilnadu design of semman and white pattai, or saffron and white stripes on
the temple compound walls. 10 days Annual Festival is celebrated with much
fanfare in this Temple.
Panagudi
is located at about 17 Kms from Radhapuram, 15 Kms from Valliyur, 57 Kms from
Thirunelveli, 220 Kms from Madurai and 100 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Nearest
Railway Station is located at Valliyur. Nearest Airport is located at Madurai
and Thiruvananthapuram.
