Padalathri Temple (Narasimhar Temple), Singaperumalkoil, Kanchipuram

Padalathri Temple (Narasimhar Temple), Singaperumalkoil, Kanchipuram
Padalathri Temple or Narasimhar Temple or Singaperumalkoil Temple is dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu located in SingaperumalkoilKanchipuram district, in the South Indian state of Tamilnadu. It was constructed in the Rock-cut architecture, dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Narasimhar and his consort Lakshmi as Ahobilavalli. The temple is built by the Pallavas during the 8th century.

The temple is open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m and has four daily rituals at various times of the day. Various festivals are celebrated in the temple, with the Chittirai Brahmotsavam during April - May, Narasimha Jayanthi, Pavithra Utsavam during Aani (June - July) and Maasi float festival during February - March being the most prominent. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamilnadu.

The village itself is named after the deity of this temple. The main deity here is Lord Narasimhar. This is a beautiful rock cut temple. The temple and even the deity are carved out of a small hillock. Here the Lord is known as Sri Paatalaadri Narasimhar. In Sanskrit Paatalaadri means a reddish hill. The original name of this place itself is Paatalaadripuram. The 1500 year old temple near Madras is believed to be one of the several cave temples built by the Pallavas.

It is located about 50 kms South of Chennai is the cave temple of Padalathri Narasimha at Singapperumal Koil that finds a mention in the Brahmmanda Purana. A rock carving at this temple refers to a donation given to this temple around 500 century AD. Hence, this temple can be said to be at least 1500 years old and can be called as a Purana Sthalam. Pallava King Mahendra Varma (580-630AD) had built about ten cave temples during his time.

Sri Narasimhar gives his Seva as "Ugra Narasimhar" with the Yoga Posture. The Perumal here shows his Third Eye on his forehead and can be witnessed during the Mangala Aarthi. Separate Sannadhi for Goddess Lakshmi known as "Ahobila Valli" is also found.
