Kavalur Murugan Temple, Perumakkanallur, Thanjavur
Kavalur Murugan Temple is a
Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Kavalur Village near
Perumakkanallur in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is situated on
the banks of Vettaru. As Vettaru flows in South to North Direction, it is
considered as Uthira Vahini. Hence the place is considered as equivalent to
Kasi. This is one of the oldest Murugan Temple in Thanjavur District.
Arunagirinathar had sung Thirupugazh Hymns on Lord Murugan of this Temple. This
Temple is located in a remote village. Pooja Items to be bought from nearby
towns only as the village doesn’t have enough facilities.
History
The Temple was built by
Villavan Peraraiyan, local chieftain and minister under Parantaka Chola I.
Villavan Peraraiyan belonged to this Village. The Idol of Villavan Peraraiyan
was sculpted in one of the pillars in second Mandapam of this Temple. Recently,
the Temple had Kumbabishekam on 01.08.1960, 1992 and 13.07.2006.
The
Temple
The Temple is built in Mada
Style architecture. The main temple can be reached after climbing 12 steps.
These 12 steps represent 12 Rashis. The Temple is also having 6 Mandapams. Lord
Murugan is housed in the sanctum. He is having six faces with 12 hands. He is
accompanied by his consorts Valli & Deivanai with his vehicle Peacock. Vimanam
over the sanctum is in Hexagonal Shape. There are Idols and shrines for
Vinayagar, Surya, Bhairavar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi in the temple
premises. Theerthams associated with this Temple are Kumara Theertham and
Vettaru. Kumara Theertham is located behind the Temple.
The Idol of Villavan
Peraraiyan, builder of this Temple was sculpted in one of the pillars in second
Mandapam of this Temple. The pillar is situated in the southern end facing
north. He is in worshipping posture with Rudraksha Japa Mala in his hands.
Sculpture of Arunagirinathar can also be seen in one of the pillars of this
Mandapam. He is also in worshipping posture with Rudraksha Japa Mala in his
hands. He is facing southern direction.
Festivals
Chithra Pournami, Aadi and
Thai Ammavasai are the festivals celebrated here.
Prayers
Lord Murugan is considered as
Adi Devatha for Mars, People pray here to get rid of Chevvai Dosham, to clear
marriage obstacles and for child boon. It is a general practice that devotees
before going to Thirukarugavur Temple will worship Lord Murugan of this Temple.
The Temple is also famous for Pithru Dosha Nivarthi.

"மானை நேர் வழி” hymn on Lord Murugan of this
Temple. Hence, this Temple is considered as Thirupugazh Sthalam.
